Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics Sportsmanship

One of the most exciting programs at the National Wild Turkey Federation focuses on young people. The JAKES Program is dedicated to informing, educating and involving America's youth in wildlife and the wise stewardship of our natural resources. With the growing number of turkey hunters, the JAKES Program is also designed to help pass along the traditions of hunting with a strong eye towards ethics and safety.

Increasing numbers of young people are learning to hunt without the benefits of an older mentor. To help address this situation, the NWTF has strengthened its commitment to the JAKES Program.

Viewing our natural world through the eyes of a child will bring fresh, new appreciation for why we are so dedicated to conserving our natural resources. The spirit of conservation and the tradition of hunting have been passed from one generation to another in this country for centuries.

This year, the New Jersey State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation sponsored a 'JAKES, Once in a Lifetime Turkey Hunt' raffle in which the winner will have the opportunity to go on a professionally guided hunt that will be video taped and includes everything to make a hunt great.

The NWTF JAKES program will help keep this legacy alive as we continue to educate our youth. The Highlands and Kittattinny Gobblers chapters conducted a very successful JAKES DAY, last fall with over 100 Jakes taking part. They learned how to make and use turkey calls, to shoot a bow, BB guns, shotguns and muzzleloaders. They learned the effectiveness of camouflage in a hide-and-seek game, and the importance of unity in the wake of September 11. Overall, it was a wonderful day for everyone.
